Programme Overview

This course outlines the key aspects of managing space programmes in a European context. We will provide an effective summary of how the European Cooperation for Space Standardisation [ECSS] is applied to programmes, focussing on the need-to-know elements of the standards that govern Project Planning and Implementation; Organisation and Conduct of Reviews; Configuration Management; and Cost, Schedule, Risk and Scope Management.

We will also provide insights into how Programme Managers interact with Product and Quality Assurance, Contracts, Engineering, Space Law and Business Development in space projects.

Part 1:  What SME managers need to know from the European Council on Space Standards [ECSS] for Programme Management

Project Planning and Implementation Key activities when planning a space project, project breakdown structures, Project phasing

Organisation and Conduct of Reviews, the formal review process, Roles in a formal review, Managing Review Item Discrepancies [RIDs]

  1. Configuration Information Management Standard
  2. Scope, Cost and Schedule Management
  3. Risk Management, Risk Assessment Classification and Risk Register Tool, Risk Mitigation, Contingency: expressing risk as a cost or schedule impact, Technology Readiness Levels

Part 2: The SME Space PM and their key interactions with:

  1. Product and Quality Assurance
  2. Contracts
  3. Engineering
  4. Business Development

Trainer Profile

Dr Ronan Wall is the Manager of the UCD Centre for Space Research. He has over 18 years’ experience in proposal writing, management and evaluation with SME, Prime Contractor, UK Space Agency and Academia. Ronan was the ESA Proposals Course instructor at Airbus Defence and Space Ltd and has taught proposal management on the UCD MSc in Space Science & Technology for the past 5 years.
